After twenty-seven tries Bree should’ve been better at this. Each new attempt should’ve been another chance to improve, a chance to do the impossible. But now, she was screwing up the basics. Run and Jump. Duck and Dodge. These were uncomplicated maneuvers that would, in theory, win the day, but she was giving into frustration and her hands were moving too slowly to keep up with the necessary commands.
“Damnit! I pushed the button, why didn’t it work?!”
She knew she should have set the controller down after try number twenty-six but she couldn’t. Not after all this work, not after all this invested time.
“This controller’s busted!” That had to be it. Her gameplay was immaculate so it had to be her controller, right? She sighed. Even as she spoke — yelled — the words, she knew they weren’t true. The controller was fully charged and fully functional. Maybe she could blame the game itself. It was cheating, somehow, or maybe it was racist against cute black girls.
Deep, calming breath.
After twenty-eight tries, Bree Danvers — certified gamer girl and Let’s Play aficionado — should’ve been better at this!
